  1. Using automatic compression in Files Online

  3. Requirements:
  4.      In order to use the compression feature of Files Online you must have a copy of the Stuffit Engine™ located in a folder called "Extensions" inside of the System Folder.  Stuffit Engine™ is part of the Stuffit Deluxe™ package by Aladdin Systems, Inc.  The Stuffit Deluxe™  package is currently running about $60 mail order and now is a good time to buy it because they are including free upgrades to version 3.0  to all buyers of 2.0.  All that is needed to use compression in Files Online, however, is the Stuffit Engine.

  6. Using:
  7.      All you need to do to compress file listings is check the box marked "Auto-compression" in the sysop dialog.  This will bring up a dialog allowing you to set the compression options. There are two options.  First set whether you want the orginal file deleted once it has been compressed.  Second, set the type of compression you want.  More information on the different types of compression can be found in the Stuffit documentation.  In order to determine which type was best for compressing file listings I ran a few tests which are summarized below.

  19. Given these results I made "Best Guess" the default setting.  If you want the compression to take less time or want to make sure you get the tightest compression possible, you may want to change the default.
